Unpacking the Difference Between Digital Transformation and IT-Enabled Organizational Transformation

Although digital transformation offers a number of opportunities for today’s organizations, information systems scholars and practitioners struggle to grasp what really is, particularly in terms how it differs from the well-established concept technology (IT)-enabled organizational transformation. By integrating literature organization science research with two longitudinal case studies—one on transformation, other IT-enabled transformation—we develop an empirically grounded conceptualization that sets these phenomena apart. We find there are distinctive differences: (1) activities leverage (re)defining organization’s value proposition, while supporting (2) involves emergence new identity, whereas enhancement existing identity. synthesize arguments process model distinguish different types transformations propose directions future research.
